Every Child Deserves the Right Path—Not Just the Right School
We all want the best for our children, but not every family can access private or top-tier charter schools. When my husband and I moved to Oklahoma, we trusted that a better school district would mean better opportunities.
What we learned: Even in “good” schools, students—especially in STEM—can be placed on the wrong academic track.
When Schools Miss the Mark
My daughter, a straight-A student, was placed in a low-level math class in 7th grade instead of Pre-Algebra. STEM camps and mentorship helped her catch up, and she later earned a full-ride scholarship.
When my son faced a similar misplacement, I was ready. I helped him prepare, advocated for testing, and ensured he got on the right track. Today, he’s a Structural Engineer.
“No one told me I should be in Chemistry.”
This Is Not Just My Story
Far too many bright students are misplaced—simply because they or their parents don’t know what to ask for.
One student took Biology in 9th grade, then was assigned to Physical Science in the 10th. When I asked why she wasn’t taking Chemistry, she said, “No one told me I should be.” She later discovered a love for Physics.
Another dreamed of studying Marine Biology. When she asked her teacher for advice, she was told, “I don’t know.” She’s now an Environmental Scientist.
